Student Housing in Italy: Finding a Safe Room

Your Main Options

International students usually choose between university dorms (studentati), private shared flats (posto letto or stanza singola), or short-term housing for the first weeks. Dorms are cheapest but limited, so apply through your DSU scholarship early.

Where to Search

Use trusted portals, university housing offices and verified student groups. Bigger cities like Milan and Rome are competitive, so start one to two months before term.

Understand the Contract

A regular lease (contratto di locazione) protects you and is often needed for your residence permit. Expect a deposit of one to three months and ask for a registered contract, not a verbal deal.

Avoid Scams

Never pay a deposit before seeing the room or signing a contract. If a listing asks for money by wire transfer before any meeting, walk away.

Budget by City

Rent is the largest part of a student budget. Compare cities on our map and rankings, check the FAQ, and get move-in templates in the PDF guide.
