DSU Scholarship and ISEE: Funding Your Studies in Italy

What Is the DSU Scholarship?

The DSU (Diritto allo Studio Universitario) is a regional scholarship for students based on financial need and academic merit. It can cover full tuition exemption, a cash grant, free or subsidized meals, and university housing.

Understanding the ISEE

Eligibility depends on your ISEE — an official indicator of your family's income and assets. International students usually need the "ISEE Parificato", calculated from documents about your family's income and property in your home country.

Gather Your Family Documents

You will need certificates of your family's income and assets, translated and legalized, plus details of household members. A CAF (tax assistance center) or patronato helps you compile the ISEE Parificato for free or a small fee.

Apply Through the Regional Agency

Each region has its own student-aid agency (for example DSU Toscana, EDISU Piemonte, LAZIODISU). Submit your application within the deadline, usually in late summer, even before you have your residence permit.

What the Scholarship Covers

Successful applicants often pay no tuition, receive a yearly grant of several thousand euros, and gain priority for dormitory rooms and canteen meals. The exact amounts depend on your ISEE band and whether you live away from home.

Keep Your Scholarship

You must earn a minimum number of credits (CFU) each year to renew. Compare universities and living costs on our rankings and map, and check the FAQ for document tips.
