Italy Student Visa (Type D): Requirements and Application Guide

What Is the Type D Student Visa?

International students who enroll in a program longer than 90 days need a national type D student visa. It lets you live in Italy for the full length of your studies and convert your stay into a residence permit after arrival.

Pre-Enrollment on Universitaly

Before applying, complete the pre-enrollment request on the Universitaly portal and wait for your chosen university to confirm it. The confirmation is one of the core documents the consulate requires.

Required Documents

You typically need a valid passport, the visa application form, a passport photo, your admission or pre-enrollment confirmation, proof of accommodation, proof of financial means (around €6,000 per year), valid health insurance, and your academic certificates with a Dichiarazione di Valore or CIMEA statement.

Proof of Funds and Insurance

Consulates want evidence that you can support yourself. A bank statement, scholarship letter or sponsor declaration usually works. Health insurance must cover the first period until you register with the national health service.

Book Your Appointment

Apply at the Italian consulate or an authorized visa center responsible for your region. Book early — appointment slots fill quickly before the autumn intake.

After Approval

With the visa in your passport, enter Italy and apply for your residence permit within eight working days. Check our FAQ and university map to prepare the rest of your move.
