Permesso di Soggiorno: Residence Permit Guide for Students

What Is the Permesso di Soggiorno?

The permesso di soggiorno is your Italian residence permit. Every non-EU student who stays longer than 90 days must apply for it within eight working days of arriving in Italy.

Get the Postal Kit

Pick up the yellow-striped "kit" envelope from a Poste Italiane office that has a Sportello Amico counter. Fill in the application form carefully — mistakes can delay your permit for months.

Documents You Need

Prepare your passport with the visa, a copy of every passport page, your admission certificate, proof of accommodation, proof of financial means, health insurance, and four passport photos. You will also pay a revenue stamp (marca da bollo) and postal and permit fees.

Submit at the Post Office

Hand the completed kit to the Sportello Amico clerk. They give you a receipt with the date of your appointment at the questura (police headquarters) and a username to track your permit online.

The Questura Appointment

At the questura you provide fingerprints and confirm your documents. Find your local office in our government office directory. Keep the receipt — it proves your legal stay while the permit is processed.

Renewing Your Permit

Renew at least 60 days before expiry, following the same postal-kit process with updated proof of enrollment and funds. Read our FAQ for renewal timing tips, and use our university map to locate services near you.
