Health Insurance for Students: SSN vs Private

Why It Matters

You need valid health cover for your visa and residence permit, and to register with a doctor. Students choose between the national health service (SSN) and private insurance.

The National Health Service (SSN)

Voluntary SSN registration gives you a tessera sanitaria, a family doctor and the same care as residents, usually for a flat yearly fee. It is the best value for a full academic year.

Private Insurance

A private policy is faster to buy and useful for your visa application or short stays, but it can be limited. Many students start with private cover, then switch to the SSN after arrival.

How to Register for the SSN

Pay the yearly contribution, then register at your local health authority (ASL/ATS/AUSL). Find the right office in our government directory and bring your codice fiscale and permit receipt.

First Steps After Arrival

Pair this with your permesso di soggiorno and codice fiscale. The FAQ covers timing, and the PDF guide includes a full health-registration checklist.
